Botox Cosmetic (botulinum toxin A) is a purified protein that temporarily improves the look of moderate-to-severe frown lines and wrinkles in adults under 65. Botox is administered by a healthcare professional as a simple, nonsurgical treatment injected directly into the facial muscles. Botox works best on the upper one-third of facial muscles, especially the forehead, furrows between the eyebrows and lines around the eyes (crow’s feet). Frown lines and laugh lines may also be treated.
Persistent lines and wrinkles are formed by the repeated contraction and movement of muscles in the face. Botox works by blocking nerve impulses to the injected muscles. During the procedure, a very small amount of Botox will be injected into specific muscles and problem areas, blocking nerve impulses to these muscles and paralyzing activity to give skin a smoother appearance and improve the look of lines and wrinkles. After treatment, the overlying skin remains smooth and unwrinkled, and untreated facial muscles contract in a normal fashion. The entire procedure takes only a few minutes, and patients see full results in three or four days. The effects will fade gradually over three to five months, but a simple repeat treatment can maintain the desired result.
