A Penetrating Keratoplasty (PK) is a full-thickness cornea transplant and is most commonly necessary for patients with corneal scars or diseases like keratoconus. During surgery, all layers of the cornea are removed and replaced with a donor cornea. The procedure itself takes about an hour; however, the recovery time is nearly a year, with many patients experiencing better vision sooner than that. Follow-up care for PK patients is as long as it is because the sutures placed during surgery need to be removed between the six and 12 month post-operative period, based on how much astigmatism the patient may have remaining in his or her eye.
