Dr. Nelson’s interest in eye care started early. Growing up with a high prescription along with wearing glasses and contact lenses at a young age, she understood the importance of good eye care and the difference an eye doctor could make in the lives of their patients. Later, after shadowing eye care providers in high school, she chose to pursue an optometric career.
Today, Dr. Nelson takes time to understand the visual concerns that matter most to each patient. Her goal is to help patients feel comfortable asking questions, understand their options, and trust their best interests are at the center of every care decision.
Dr. Nelson earned her undergraduate degree from the University of North Dakota before completing her Doctor of Optometry degree at the Illinois College of Optometry, where she graduated summa cum laude. She then completed her ocular disease residency in Advanced Optometric Management of Cataract, Refractive, Glaucoma, and Cornea at Vance Thompson Vision in West Fargo.
During residency, Dr. Nelson participated in several glaucoma-related research studies. She is especially interested in emerging approaches to glaucoma management, including direct selective laser trabeculoplasty (DSLT), sustained-release medication implants, and minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS) devices.
Her case report was accepted as a case paper for the 2025 American Academy of Optometry Annual Meeting, where she was selected to deliver a short lecture on adding HOA correction to scleral lenses for patients with keratoconus.
Outside of work, Dr. Nelson enjoys reading, pickleball, hiking, sand volleyball, and spending time with friends and family.
